In the late 1500s, the Holy League, a coalition of Catholic maritime states promoted by Pope St. Pius V, fought against the Ottomans, an Islamic empire centered in Istanbul. The Turks were trying to extend their influence beyond Southeast Europe. A Turkish victory might have permitted the expansion of Islam deep into Europe.
On the eve of the history-altering battle of Lepanto, the sailors prayed the Rosary on their knees. The five-hour naval battle ended on October 7, 1571, with a victory for the Holy League and a victory for Our Lady. In gratitude, Pope St. Pius V declared October 7 the feast day of Our Lady of Victory, which was later renamed to the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Whether we are facing difficulties or uncertainties or simply wanting to draw closer to our Lord, the Rosary opens the door to a deeper faith life, a closer union with our Lord and His Blessed Mother, and a richer life of discipleship.
Thanks again to the St. Therese FIAT Prayer Group for helping us kick-off the Month of the Holy Rosary with 2000 Hail Mary Prayers on Saturday, Oct 5th. Over two dozen people gathered to pray to Our Lady and have fellowship. 20 petitions were said and many more prayers were sent up for our sake and that of the whole world.
