St. Patrick’s Day and My Experience
St. Patrick’s Day holds a special place in my heart, not just as a celebration of Irish heritage but as a reminder of the deep ties between Ireland and Nigeria, the land of my birth. St. Patrick, the great missionary bishop, is not only the patron saint of Ireland but also of Nigeria. This is because the Irish missionaries, those fearless heralds of the Catholic faith, were among the first to bring Christianity to my homeland, planting seeds that would blossom into a vibrant and enduring faith.
My own connection to this legacy is more than historical—it is personal. My parents, following the tradition of the time, gave me the Irish name Kevin at baptism. In those days, a saint’s name was required, and with the overwhelming presence of Irish missionaries, many Nigerian Catholics bore names of Irish saints. So in a way, I can say that I am Irish—not by blood, but by faith.
Every St. Patrick’s Day, as I witness the parades, the sea of green, and the joyous celebrations, I reflect on this rich spiritual lineage. It reminds me that faith knows no borders, and that the missionary zeal of St. Patrick continues to echo across continents, binding together people of different lands in the love of Christ.
In Christ,
